Ah, the sweetness of all those new little creatures. Isn’t it funny the way the blackbird chicks always seem bigger than the parent? At least that is how they seem to me when I see them in my garden.

Thank-you Gallivanta. They do seem much bigger – they probably are! The poor parents are worn to a threadpaper with feeding them.

Thank-you Julie. The Robin was feeding its chick under one of the bushes and I just couldn’t focus on it.

Great shots even so, I hadn’t appreciated how large the Robins offspring are.

Thank-you Jerry! I was so pleased to see the goslings. The last time we had any in the garden was spring 2012 and I have missed having them to watch.

How lovely. I haven’t seen any chicks in the garden yet but I can hear them. Everywhere we walk the hedgerows are bursting with the clamour of hungry little beaks. I am surprised that so many survive given the amount of noise that they make. I will have to keep a close watch on the garden now.

I have been working in the garden this afternoon and every few minutes I heard such a din from the hedge near me. You’re right! The noise they make is like a dinner gong for a predator.

I hope the ducklings and goslings don’t start disappearing one by one like they did last year. They’re cute enough to sit and watch all afternoon, and I hope you have a chance to.

Thank-you Allen! I haven’t seen the duck today but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything has happened to them. The mother has probably found them a safe place with lots of food. I saw the goose family and they are all still fine.

Great post, Clare. And I’d love to know what the blackbird mother is saying to her two chicks.

Thank-you Cynthia. She is probably saying the same thing my mother used to say to me and my brother and sister when we started squabbling at the dinner table!
