Before Christmastide draws to a close I thought I’d better write something about what we managed to do over the past few weeks.
The 1st of December began with a frost (we had many frosty and foggy days in December) but by the time I had driven Elinor into Norwich for her afternoon classes at college it had clouded over and had become a little milder. The light wasn’t really good enough for photographs but the city had recently put it’s decorations up and was looking festive, though these photos make it look rather gloomy!
During the whole month, unless I got to the city before 9.00 am, I was unable to find a parking space in any of the car-parks. Norwich Council would like their visitors to arrive by train, bus, bike or on foot and don’t make it at all easy for car drivers. There is very little public transport from where I live so we have to drive into town. There are ‘park and ride’ places on the outskirts of the city but an acquaintance of mine queued for ages to get into the car-park and then waited an age with crowds of other shoppers for a bus which was full before he got to it! He returned home without doing his shopping. I have discovered a roadside parking area near to the college where I get two hours free parking and which is only a fifteen minute walk away from the city centre! This is where I had parked that day. I had coffee and a sandwich in a café and did some Christmas shopping and then made my way back to my car.
This former coaching inn is on St Stephen’s Road and was built in the 17th century on the site of an asylum. The pub is said to be haunted.
For most of the month, Richard was still unable to drive any distance and was very bored being at home all the time. On the 2nd of December he joined Elinor and me in the car and after I had dropped Elinor off at college just before 9.00 am we drove to the north Norfolk coast and spent the morning in Cromer.
We were so surprised to see this bird at such close quarters! Normally they keep their distance from humans and find worms and molluscs etc. on the shore.
After walking along the front we then visited the pier.
Returning home from shopping the following week, Elinor and I marvelled at the beauty of this misty sunset
Richard and I had a lot to do at church this Christmas. At the beginning of the month we had an Advent Carol Service with all our favourite Advent hymns and Advent readings. Usually we have a Carols and Capers service with the local Morris group and their friends at the beginning of the season but sadly they were unable to organise it this time. We had a Christmas Carol service on the 21st of December and then our church hosted the Midnight Mass service on Christmas Eve too.
These following photos were taken by Richard in our garden that same morning.
Richard and I went out for a walk across the fields on New Year’s Eve. The weather was very gloomy and I didn’t find much to photograph.
And that was my December which also included Christmas celebrations with much cooking and baking, a lot of driving about, lots of shopping and an amazing amount of housework!
Thanks for visiting!

Thank-you Margaret. I am hoping January will be much more relaxing as Richard is helping out with the driving again. His back and leg are improving all the time (he is actually doing all the exercises the physio gave him!) and I hope we will be able to do some walks together – bliss!

Haunted pubs, a deserted pier and a lifeboat station–what a lot of interesting spots you visited! It sounds, and looks, like you’ve had a really nice time with family this past month!

Thank-you Kerry! Looking back I think we did have a good time and managed to fit in a few family moments. While it was happening it felt a little like I was on a speeding train with no brakes! Christmas came and went without me savouring more than a moment! Which is probably all to the good!

Those are beautiful photos, Clare, and time by the beach. Your December sounds like it was full of good things and pleasant memories.
The misty sunset slide show is lovely! Sunrise and sunset are my favorite times of the day.

Thank-you Lavinia. I love sunrise and sunset too. We don’t get a clear sunrise where we live as there are lots of trees in the way and I don’t get the chance to travel away from home to see it clearly very often. I’m usually knocking on bedroom doors and shouting ‘Don’t go back to sleep! Get out of bed!’ at sunrise in the winter!

It was a very busy month indeed! I thought that the photos in the lifeboat station were very interesting, and I was going to comment on them, but then I saw the misty sunset slideshow, absolutely stunning! I also like the photos from the frosty walk on New Years Day.

Thank-you Jerry! It was a busy month and I’m glad I remembered to take a few photos of the places we visited. Thank-you for the kind words about the sunset photos. There was no skill involved on my part; I just kept stopping the car to take another shot and I did nothing to enhance the colours before posting the pictures. It was all Nature’s work!

Hi Clare, I’ve missed your posts, I really enjoy reading about your life in Suffolk. What has happened to Richard?
Thank you for bringing back some lovely memories, as we’ve had a few camping holidays in East Runton near Cromer with the children and the Pier is one of our favourites, thank you too for showing your lovely photos.
Some of our happiest times this last month have been spent walking with the girls and their partners, your photo of Phil up a tree, did make me laugh.
Best wishes, Julie

Thank-you Julie. Richard, while just sitting at the kitchen table slipped a disc in his back which trapped the sciatic nerve which in turn made his leg go numb. He found that he had real difficulty walking and had a few nasty falls. This all happened in October and it has taken this long for most of the feeling to come back to his leg. The GPs at the local surgery, the out-of-hours doctor and the physiotherapist have all been marvellous. Richard has worked hard at his twice daily exercises and is much better. He can now drive to Norwich and back again, is back on his bike and can walk about a mile and a half before getting tired. Years of bad posture and ignoring doctors who advised him to exercise his back!
It was such fun walking with the girls and Phil! Having a young man to laugh at and with was a real tonic!
Best wishes to you too Julie xx

I love the shots from the beach with the wild waves. I don’t get to see the ocean much anymore.
The misty sunset was pretty and I love the frosted plants. I haven’t seen many here this year.
I hope Richard is completely over his sciatica. Gosh, that is so painful. I’m not surprised that he had to walk with a cane. He’s lucky he could walk at all.
I had a houseful at Christmas too and reading about how busy you were made me thankful that I don’t have to do it all again until next year. I’m glad you had a good Christmas!

Thank-you Allen! I’m glad Christmas only comes once a year too! In recent years it appears to come round much quicker than it used to do!
Richard has no pain in his leg and just one small patch that is still numb. He still has pain now-and-again in his back and his muscles need building up a lot more before he will feel able to do all the things he wants to do but he is so much better than he was and we are both very thankful. He wants to be completely better by the summer so we can enjoy our hill walking again. We also have a holiday in the Swiss alps booked and he’ll have to be fit by then!

Well, you make such nice Advent crowns. Well done, you and Elinor! Thanks for taking me on the tour to the allegedly haunted pub (I think people just get drunk and think they’re seeing things, right?) And Cromer — an interesting-looking place — and all the other photos too. Although I feel like a bad friend — I didn’t know Richard was walking with a cane till I saw his photo. clearly I missed something, so will go back and check a couple posts back. He looks well. Is he feeling much better now?
I hope the new year is off to a good start for all four of you and other loved ones.

Thank-you Cynthia. I post so infrequently these days it is not surprising you weren’t aware of Richard’s problem. He has had a bad back for some years and while sitting at the kitchen table in October he slipped a disc which trapped the sciatic nerve and caused such a lot of pain! His leg went numb and he kept falling over which meant more damage. He has had lots of exercises to do and slowly the feeling is returning to his leg. He is feeling much, much better, thank-you. Our new year seems to be progressing well as I hope yours is.
