More information! With thanks to Cat again.
If you’ve recently been visiting any WordPress.com website you may have noticed a banner appearing which has some small print that says something about Cookies and Privacy and asks you to accept to continue using the website. But many of us have recently experienced an annoying glitch with this banner. When click accept we seem to be going around in circles as the whole page we were just looking at refreshes. The refreshed page then re-appears only to display this banner again. And so some of us have been going around in circles as we click accept -> refresh -> accept -> refresh, etc. Well there’s a solution, at least a temporary one…

My message seemed to work okay when I clicked it. For now, that’s all I plan to do. I think this is creating a lot of unnecessary worry. I hope the family is well, Clare! xo

I know! Isn’t it awful! Every single company we have anything to do with and all the societies we belong to have had to send out letters and e-mails asking us to state how we wish them to keep in touch. If we do nothing they are unable to contact us after 25th May!
We are fine, Jill – thank you! I hope you and your husband are well too. xo

I think it effects you all more than us…but what do I know. 🙂 I’m happy to hear you and the family are well. We’re doing great too, just dealing with an extremely wet spring…our hummies aren’t enjoying it either. xo

That explains an email I got about May 25th from iCatCare.

The request for this banner appeared while I was in the middle of updating my info page a few hours ago. I had a quick read, clicked apply (or whatever it was) and it was supposed to appear at the bottom of my contact page, which it then didn’t! But I didn’t have to access the cookie widget, just had to go to my discussion settings and scroll down to the Akismet Privacy part and click on ‘Display a privacy notice under your comment forms.’ And then I realised it appears under the comment form instead. I am going to remove that as I shall, instead, give a link to the page itself on my info page when it’s ready, and I agree it will probably put people off commenting. It would put me off, even though there’s nothing they’re doing now that they weren’t doing before. This is the link it wanted me to show: https://akismet.com/privacy/ I’m not sure where the cookie thing came in unless you’re seeing a different request from the one I saw? How odd.

Thanks, Val. This is so confusing! I am hoping that WordPress come up with something simple for us to do.

Don’t worry about it. I’ve been using this site on and off, for many years (in different blogs), and things here change a lot and often, you’ll get used to it. By the way, apparently you can customise the cookie widget if you want (and change the default wording). See here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/cookie-widget/ and the last response in this forum thread: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-to-customize-the-new-cookie-policy-widget/#post-2440047

Thanks, Val. I’m sure I’ll get the hang of this eventually! I am not technically minded and when reading some of the rules and regulations and ‘how to…’ posts my brain switches off!

PS when you change a setting in wp-admin, remember to scroll down (or up) and click the ‘Save changes’ button or it will leave it as it was!

Obviously you’ve re-blogged this because you’ve had a WP problem. Fingers crossed, not me yet. But I know where to look if I do!

No problem for me yet but my daughter has experienced difficulty accessing some sites since Friday.

Hi Clare, I came across your older posts about your walks around Norwich – they wonderfully evoke the sense that something interesting is just around the corner.

Fortunately, in the WP app there are no banners or circles. Still, good to be in the information loop!

Thanks for keeping us in the loop as far as complying with the new privacy laws.
